Q3 Rally – Interview with the developers P3rlE and insellium from Q3 Rally (English Version)

I conducted a written interview with P3rlE and insellium from Q3 Rally. So let’s hop right in.

Badb0y: Hello P3rlE, nice to hear from you and nice that you are working on your mod again!

P3rlE: Hello. Thanks for the interview and the chance to make the game a little better known again. At the same time, I would like to introduce my new team member insellium today. He’s helping now I’ve been with me for almost 2 months and has already achieved a lot.

Badb0y: Since when has the mod actually existed, when was the starting point.

P3rlE: I don’t know when exactly the mod started. The oldest post on the old one Website I could find dated 12/21/2000. The idea for the mod came from the original one Team shortly after the release of Quake 3 Arena.

Badb0y: Which mods did you like in Quake 3?

P3rlE: I loved playing Quake 3 Rally before I became a team member myself. Plus Military Forces, Quake 3 Fortress, Q3Pong or Afterwards.

insellium: I’ve played Afterwards, Quake 3 Rally and Military Forces, among others.

Badb0y: Which modes in Quake 3 did you play regularly?

P3rlE: I didn’t play Quake 3 that much. Almost exclusively mods. But if so, then on dearest CTF.

insellium: I rarely play Quake 3 now, but my favorite modes is always Deathmatch and CTF.

Badb0y: Can one say Q3Rally was and is a 1-developer project of yours?

P3rlE: Before I took over the mod, there were three guys. Then I’ll be alone for a long time worked on it. After the first standalone version and the associated renaming in Q3Rally I had help from TheBigBuu for quite a while. Then I was back for a long time traveling alone, which has often led to a lack of motivation. And almost to the setting of the Game. Then insellium came and got me out of this low.

insellium: I don’t think so. Q3Rally was originally created by a team (coder & artist). Even the mappers helped develop the mod and created special maps. P3rle was always surrounded by people ready to help. I am no exception as I have experience with Q3 modding and I find it very interesting, to work with P3rle on Quake 3 Rally.

Badb0y: How did the re-activation of the mod actually come about? What drives you after such a long time?

P3rlE: I owe the kick of putting work back into the game to insellium. He has me brought out of the motivation hole, so to speak. And now the fire is burning again.

insellium:I think Q3Rally has great potential. Q3Rally not only enables you to To play racing or arena on wheels in multiplayer, but also to add new content. So I want to make the game a worthy representative of the „survival racing“ genre. I also believe in the future popularity of the project, which is so lacking right now.

Badb0y: How long has your new website been online? The gamer servers exist since when?

P3rlE: The website has been around since 2010. The online servers are relatively new and still running a long way from what I want. This is how the downloads of addons should in the future coming from my web server which will greatly increase the download speed.

insellium: Unfortunately, I can’t comment on that.

Badb0y: There should be a new version of you. What will be the most important innovations?

P3rlE: In the new version 0.0.3.0 there will be a lot of bugfixes in the code and one too huge amount of graphical updates. One or the other new map is also in the game to be found. Especially for the still young game fashion Domination.

insellium: For Q3Rally the most important change in my opinion is the improvement of the graphical Part. Most weapon models as well as Ammo boxes were made up of custom models replaced in the early noughties. In contrast to the previous version 0.0.1.2 were Shader files rewritten and old maps improved and recompiled. Another important change will be to reduce the size of the game. The reason for this is the presence of unused textures in the game. Thanks to this reduction, you can download the game without long waiting times.

Badb0y: So what are you going to do with Q3Rally? Is there an approximate roadmap.

P3rlE: Yes. A roadmap for version 0.0.4.0 has recently been available in the SVN. Want in the future release a new version every 6 months. It will be one on my side or two new game modes. A few bugs are still in the bug tracker that apply to work off.

insellium: I’m on the team as a mapper and tester. I also help with the models and skins. I also plan to create new cards, port old cards from Q1R, create some DLC and help popularize the game.

Badb0y: I can’t find any current gameplay video with the mod in a hurry. Does that exist?

P3rlE: Unfortunately there is no current video. But there will certainly be new material soon.

insellium: Unsurprisingly, no new Q3Rally gameplay videos have been found. The last Video that caught my eye was a review posted 4 months ago from the QuakeFans channel was published and reviewed version 0.0.1.2 (https://youtu.be/YCB6HxHLrq8).

Badb0y: What do you play and which game genres do you play?

P3rlE: As a family man, I don’t have that much time to play besides my development by Q3Rally. But when there is some time, I either play C&C Generals or Need for Speed Most Wanted.

insellium: Since I’m younger than P3rle, I find time to play something more often. Right now, I’m actively playing Power Bomberman, a fan project based on the Bomberman universe, with working multiplayer and a wide variety of content. As for genres, I prefer FPS, arcade, platformers and racing.

Badb0y: Did you still play Quakelive? Doesn’t have to.

P3rlE: I only played it very briefly.

insellium: I played Quake Live for a while. But not anymore.

Badb0y: Racing theme. I think it’s a great time for racers right now. There are the Triple A large-scale productions Racer, Fun Karts and Retro Racer and homemade free racer games. Lately there has been a trend towards Indian bird’s eye view racers that depict very small cars that drive loops. Do you have game favorites in the racer genre and what is your favorite piece of equipment (steering wheel, gamepad, etc.).

P3rlE: As already mentioned, I think Need for Speed Most Wanted is very successful. In my opinion that best game of the series. I also found GRID really good. I have equipment for racing games never really used. I played Grid and NfS MW with an XBox gamepad.

insellium: I played the Need For Speed Series. My favorite parts: „Most Wanted“ and that of fans revived „SoapBox Race World“ (World Evolved RU). Game equipment, especially for the Racing, I don’t have it.

Q3 Rally – Die Entwicklung geht weiter, Version 0.0.3 ist in Arbeit

Racing und Quake 3 mit Waffen. (q3rally.com, moddb)

P3rlE und insellium von Q3 Rally werkeln gerade an einer neuen Standalone Version, Version 0.0.3, von Q3 Rally.

Am 1. Juni soll die neue Version fertig sein. Da passiert demnächst also so einiges.

P3rlE arbeitet immer noch an Q3 Rally! P3rlE war ja damals, unter anderem, bereits im quake.de Forum aktiv. Na, da habe ich mich gefreut wieder was von Ihm zu hören.

Ich war echt lange nicht mehr in Q3R und bin mal reingehoppt in den Racing Mode. Die Musik finde ich gut. Ich musste was an der Config schrauben und habe die Grafik voll hochgedreht. Das Fahrgefühl geht in Richtung Offroad Jeep, finde ich. Beim Betätigen von Accelerate höre ich ein Dauerknacken. Deathmatch mit Waffen will ich unbedingt mal Online spielen.

World of Padman – Die Entwicklung geht weiter

World of Padman ist endlich wieder in den News! Juhu!

Das Team rund um WoP hat sich getroffen und es gibt traumhafte Neuigkeiten für uns Alle. Ich wüsste nicht wie das noch zu Toppen wäre :)

  1. Aktuelle 64-bit Binaries für alle drei Betriebssysteme erscheinen, also Windows, Linux und MacOS, auf Basis der letzten Version von ioquake3.
    Zunächst wird es ein kleines aber hoffentlich kurzfristiges Release einer Version 1.6.1 für World of Padman geben. Dieses wird ein reines Wartungsrelease sein, es wird hier also keine neuen Inhalte geben, aber Bugfixes. Ziel ist es, WoP möglichst schnell wieder auf allen Betriebssystemen lauffähig zum machen. Da MacOS schon seit längerem keine 32bit-Programme mehr unterstützt, ist WoP dort nicht mehr lauffähig.
  2. Neuer Content angekündigt!
    Langfristig ist eine neue Version 1.7 geplant, in der es dann auch neu Inhalte und Features geben wird. Welche diese sind, wollen wir Euch jetzt natürlich noch nicht verraten. Wir werden jedoch zur rechten Zeit darüber berichten.

Meine Quake 4 Beschreibung

2005. Das war die Zeit wo id seine Titel an 3rd Partys auslagerte, weil sie nicht alle ihre eigenen Marken mit Nachfolgern bedienen konnten.

Raven machten Spiele zwischen mittelmässig, meist überdurchschnittlich und super, eine Niete war nie dabei. Das letzte eigenständige Raven Spiel „nach altem FPS Raven Muster“ war Singularity 2010. Ich meine das floppte, aber war dennoch spielenswert. Heute ist Raven bei der COD Maschine mit dabei.

Die grossen Erwartungen an einen neuen Quake SP Titel konnten nicht erfüllt werden.

Das FPS Genre war zu dieser Zeit gerade im Umbruch. Übertriebenes komplexes Leveldesign und Backtracking Orgien waren zu der Zeit bereits passe. Konsolenentwicklung, New School COD, grosse Story etc wurden immer wichtiger. Q4 blieb im Grunde altmodisch.

Action Version von Doom 3; Stroggs kommen zwar vor, aber so richtig Quake-ig wars nicht, das Sci-Fi und Soldaten Setting erinnerte eher an die Doom Reihe; hat die besten Türen finde ich als Säulen- und Türen Fetischist; bietet fast nur Frontalkämpfe an, Gegner stehen vor einem, die Kämpfe müssten theoretisch eigentlich langweilig sein aber waren sie nicht; Sniper; das Leveldesign gewinnt keinen Preis = Zwei Wege Struktur; angedeutete Team AI und Waffenupgrades; ich vermisste wie in Doom 3 eine coole Physik wo Gegner als Ragdoll umfallen.

Eine erweiterte Doom 3 Engine kommt zum Einsatz die nun grössere Aussenareale darstellen kann. id tech 4 konnte man wie bei allen id Engines schön via Konsolenbefehlen oder Configbearbeitung frisieren.

Wer Q4SP nicht mochte, sagt das er sich zumindest an die Stroggofizierung, die blutige Mensch Umwandlung in einen Cyborg, erinnern kann. Und die war in der deutschen Version geschnitten (so lol).

Generell existieren erst mal drei Damage Zonen bei Enemys im Singleplayer: Beine – Körper – Kopf. Es kommen noch weitere Faktoren dazu, wie Maschinegun Zoom und die Unterscheidung von Metallflächen und Hautflächen bei Enemys. Wer von unterschiedlichem Damage bei Kopfschüssen, Zoom Kopfschüssen und MG-Haut nichts weiss, kommt trotzdem durch alle Schwierigkeitsgrade. Das gute alte „einfach draufhalten“ funktioniert.

Quake Champions – Frühling Update 2021 erschienen

Der Patchlog benennt neue Skins, Bugfixes und Anpassungen für den Death Knight. (steam, quake.bethesda.net)

Was Weltbewegendes und Neues wie einen neuen Champion, ein Mode oder eine neue Map sehe ich diesmal nicht. Alle Vierteljahr erscheint ein regulärer Patch für Quake Champions.
